Shanghai's best weird and wonderful ice cream flavours
Chocolate is so... vanilla. Here's where to find the city’s most pleasantly surprising (and sometimes wacky) scoops.
Pree
Get totally unique ice cream made-to-order at Pree, like mala-tinted Sichuan pepper and pistachio or sweet-and-salty Dandong organic tomato with cheese popcorn. 48/58RMB per scoop.
Also try Lemongrass and ginger.
Xintiandi North Block, No 15, Lane 181 Taicang Lu, near Madang Lu.
Gracie’s
A staff-favourite combo, get some Chinese flair with a cone of Gracie’s black sesame-honey and white chocolate-ginger ice creams. 30RMB per scoop; 50RMB for two.
Also try Coconut-avocado sorbet.
Al’s Diner: 204 Xinle Lu, near Donghu Lu.
Al’s Bakery: 174 Xiangyang Nan Lu, near Fuxing Zhong Lu.
Bonus
This pop-up shop’s rose and clove gelato is all sweet floral and spice. Two-scoop cone 30RMB.
Also try Salted caramel.
276 Wulumuqi Zhong Lu, near Wuyuan Lu.
Sober Café
This charcoal-coconut soft serve with coconut ash may be black-hearted, but it’s also sinfully delish. 30RMB per cup.
Also try Black&White (mascarpone and charcoal-coconut).
99 Yandang Lu, near Nanchang Lu.
Kiss the Tiramisu
Get stuck into these original and strawberry-flavoured ‘tiramisu’ ice creams with thick smears of fresh marscapone inside the cups. 35RMB per cup.
Also try Matcha-red bean tiramisu.
205 Fumin Lu, near Julu Lu.
Sweetist
The floral tones of Sweetist’s honey-lavender and raspberry-rose scoops are delightfully light at this 100-day pop-up at Coffee Belt until the end of July. 25RMB for one scoop, 45RMB for two.
Also try Pistachio.
368 Shaanxi Nan Lu, near Fuxing Zhong Lu.
